The papillons, also known as butterfly dogs get its distinct butterfly wing looking ears with fringed hair. They are delicate, quirky looking dogs with abundant, silky flowing coat. They do not have an undercoat and their hair is quite long. Although they are not as sensitive like other toy dogs, when it comes to allergies, papillons can still suffer from it and even cause it to their owners. Owners should always be on the look out for any allergic symptoms their pets may exhibit.

Symptoms that your papillon is having an allergic reaction could include excessive scratching, itching and licking of the ears, muzzle, paws or other parts of the body. Other symptoms could also include hair loss, recurring ear infections as well as changes in bowel movements. A pap experiencing an allergic reaction could also salivate and start licking his body, orange or red tinged hair is a sure sign of allergies in dogs. Difficulty breathing is a symptom mostly experienced by humans rather than dogs.

Allergies do not always begin from birth some papillons get them even well into maturity. Allergic reactions can come from food, parasites, insects, molds, pollen, changes in the weather, rage weed and fall seasons. Knowing what your dog is allergic to does not have to be a trial and error experience, just like with humans there is a test available to determine elements or food that dogs can be allergic to. Knowing is winning half the battle by helping papillons avoid such allergens. There are a few basic allergens that dogs can be susceptible to, these inlcude;

Flea and Bacterial Allergies – this is most common especially to hairy dogs. Dogs can suffer from extreme itching on the bite area, causing redness, hair loss and sometimes even sores. The flea is actually not as dangerous as its saliva which passes through your pet and causes the allergic reaction. Flea bites are harmful to both dogs and humans an can be addressed by proper grooming, cleaning and a medicated shampoo if necessary. Garlic added to the dogs food is known to repel fleas and other bugs. You can also spray vinegar water on the dogs’ outdoor living space to get rid of the bugs. Bacteria can also affect dogs, normally it would also cause severe itching and lesions, this could be a Staph infection; if this is the case immediate medical attention is needed for both dog and owner.

Inhalants – these are also called atopy or hypersensitivity allergens in the environment. Symptoms would include scratching, itching and salivating that cause orange or reddish fur, This would include those that can be inhaled, it may come as a surprise for new dog owners, but they can be allergic to pollen too. Other inhalants include cigarette smoke, molds, mildew, dust and dust mites. This is usually treated with antibiotics, shampoos and antihistamines. Hypersensitation or exposing your pet to the allergen little by little to get the papillons immune system going is often used as the last resort.

Food Allergies – this type of allergy is often easy to spot as it can have an immediate reaction. Food allergy can be differentiated from intolerance judging by the symptom. Intolerance often causes diarrhea or an upset stomach while allergies can show similar symptoms as atopy. Dogs can often be allergic to specific foods such as beef, dairy, eggs, chicken, lamb and fish.

With allergies, prevention is always better than the cure and it is important to know what your pap is allergic to. Although papillons are generally healthy dogs, they are fragile and severe allergic reactions can be fatal to them.

What Does The Horsefield Tortoise Eat

The horsefield tortoise is widely preferred as a pet among people who want to keep tortoises as pets. The main reason for this is its small size. Building Your Own Humming Bird Feeder

We all know that taking a beautiful photo of humming birds is hard to obtain, even when they are inside cages. The only thing that you could do is buy a hummingbird feeder to bring these birds into photographic distance. But these ready-made hummingbird feeders are somewhat expensive. Worry no more, because you can make your very own hummingbird feeder for free. All you need to do is recycle used or old prescription vials for making nectar dispensers. Hummingbirds are known to feed on nectar.

The materials needed to make your own hummingbird feeder are clear prescription vials with a fitted cap, a few feet of thin wire or heavy thread and transparent tape or scotch tape. You may also need a sharp pointed metal object like an ice pick.

To start with this project, heat up the ice pick or whatever sharp pointed metal you are using and make a pair of holes on each side of the prescription vial, near the open end where the cap is placed. You have to make sure that they are close but not too close that the holes are covered with the bottom of the cap when it is placed on. The size of the holes should be small enough to keep the liquid inside the container. 

Next, round up the thin wire or thread. Secure it by wrapping with the scotch tape or transparent tape on each end of the thread or thin wire to the prescription vial. If you want extra holding capacity, wrap a second piece of transparent tape around the prescription vial.

Basically, that’s all you have to do in making hummingbird feeders. It depends on you how many hummingbird feeders you want to make, but if you want to enjoy watching more than just one hummingbird, you can make a number of these feeders and tie them into a mobile and place them in your backyard. 

To fill up your hummingbird feeder, remove the cap holding the prescription vial on and fill it up with nectar and replace the cap. Closed tightly, turn the prescription vial upside down as quickly as you can. The feeder’s hole should be at the bottom, a small amount of nectar will leak out the feeder’s holes, but as soon as the vacuum inside the prescription vial is created, the leakage will stop.

Now we come to making the nectar for the hummingbirds. Basically there are two choices of nectar. First is the nectar mix that is commercially available in a granulated form. Or second, you can make your own nectar from a sugar solution. For the purpose of information, honey is not recommended. Research proves that too much honey is harmful to hummingbirds, since it weakens them and may cause death to these birds.

Just where to hang the feeders? In general, it is good to hang these feeders in any part of the garden where there is no direct exposure to sunlight and where the wind will not be able to shake the feeder. Direct sunlight speeds up fermentation of the nectar inside the feeder. It is recommended to hang the hummingbird feeders near the flowers in the garden to further attract these birds. Now, you can enjoy watching hummingbirds hovering and perching on your own feeder.

How To Compost Cat Poo

Like the poor man who had a pea growing in his lung (true!) most of us are growing a seedling of green conscience these days. We are being encouraged to recycle so many items that the ones that do make their way into the ‘regular’ bin tend to stick in our minds. If you compost or otherwise dispose of organic waste you’ll probably end up with a bin bag full of plastic packaging. If you own a pet cat or dog the warm parcels of their waste will make strange accompaniments to all that inert plastic.

Toxoplasmosis & Toxocara
How can it be that something as natural, green and organic as your cat, can be contributing to landfill in this way? Almost anywhere you look the advice will be to keep your pet waste away from your compost heap despite a growing number of biodegradable litters appearing on the market. The advice is based on the danger of Toxoplasma gondii, a parasitic protozoa (not a virus as is often thought) present in cat faeces. This can cause toxoplasmosis, a potentially fatal disease especially for pregnant women and small children with their still-developing immune systems. Toxocara catis (roundworms) are also likely to be found and can infect humans as well as cats.

Hot compost kills germs
Good reasons to keep cat poo out of your compost then. Well, yes, but there are ways to cope with these pathogens if you know how to compost correctly and with due care. Composts can get to temperatures in excess of 130ÚC at which point very little living matter can survive. At much lower temperatures in the range of 65-70ÚC, pathogens will still die in a matter of seconds. The British Standard PAS100 ensure that green waste compost reaches 65ÚC for a minimum of 7 days, twice, which is erring on the side of paranoia but they can’t afford to take any risks. What’s amazing is that compost generates these temperatures on its own given the right materials.

Biodegradable litter
With cats, unlike dogs, it’s not just the poo that has to be disposed of but the litter as well. Litter made from clay or silica will not breakdown (in our lifetime anyway) and will get stuck in landfill. There are compostable litters available made from wood chips, sawdust, newspapers and plant derivatives such as wheat or corn residues and wood chips but composting them means removing the poo first, unless you can be sure of getting your compost heap hot enough to kill the germs. This is perhaps ironic as the faeces are rich in nitrogen (which heats the compost) and the litter in carbon (which has a cooling effect) – a match made in heaven from a composting point of view. Remove the nitrogen and the carboniferous material will take an age to disappear. Together they would be much more likely to reach the elusive hot temperatures required to make the compost sanitary. Even if you choose not to try composting the excrement, the litter will have soaked up urine, rich in phosphorus and nitrogen and be a valuable addition.

Cat Poo Wormery
Dog poo wormeries are being found to successfully deal with doggie do but cat poo wormeries aren’t as straightforward because of the amount of litter that accompanies the faeces. The worms seem not to enjoy the quantity or the mix. Removing the poos for the wormery and having a traditional composter for the litter, kept separate from the compost bin you’ll be using for any edibles, might be one solution but if it sounds a palaver having three systems on the go, then read on.

NatureMill composter
One composter that has yet to reach the British market is the NatureMill. Designed by scientist and inventor Russ Cohn, the NatureMill has started to solve the pet poo problems of San Francisco and is spreading across the United States.
The composter automatically grinds the input waste so it acts like a digester where shredding is part of the process. It is normal for digesters to need additional carbon-rich materials such as sawdust or wood pellets to keep the contents at the correct moisture levels and NatureMill is no different. This makes it perfect for the constituents of kitty litter.
NatureMill also maintains an internal temperature of up to 60ÚC (140ÚF) as a small current is used to heat the bin and it is well-insulated. The total electricity used is said to be 5 kWh per month, the same as for a night light. It has a carbon filter to absorb unwanted smells and can be operated indoors or outdoors. The bin costs $299 but a further $82.50 to ship it to Europe, but it really does solve the problem and keep your cat’s waste out of landfill. Compost for the garden is ready in an incredible two weeks. For any cat lovers with no or limited outside space this clever little disposal machine could be the answer. The only problem then is what to do with the compost when the houseplants are well-fed and blooming! How about a spot of guerilla gardening - feed a tree.

Compost alchemy
A fear of germs permeates our culture to the point where stories of sterile homes being responsible for childhood complaints like asthma have spread in the press and the dreadful O.C.D. can lead to compulsive cleaning (not in my house). Yet our understanding of hygiene has saved us from cholera and typhoid epidemics so is there a balance to be aimed for? Perhaps the next stage of understanding germs will come from ecology and knowing how microorganisms interact and keep each others' populations under control. The compost process is certainly a complex set of interactions of millions of these microbes, their numbers swelling and ebbing according to the conditions in the surrounding environment. And somehow, at the end of it, a clean, sweet smelling earth is produced that feeds our plants and stores potential greenhouse gas carbon in a stable form. Perhaps we can trust Nature after all.

Help! My Dog Has Diarrhoea!

Most cases of diarrhoea in properly vaccinated dogs are trivial in health terms, and though they can be alarming and messy they don't need you to rush off to your vets - just as you wouldn't rush off to your doctor on the first sign of an upset tummy and a dose of the runs. That having been said, some cases can be serious, particularly in dogs weakened by other illness or old age, or if they have not been vaccinated.

Dogs that are otherwise fit will usually respond to simple measures designed to provide the lining of the intestine with a rest so it can heal, perhaps supplemented by simple treatments you can administer yourself. More serious cases will require more medication and perhaps even intravenous fluids and hospitalization. The bottom line is, if you are worried or if the diarrhoea lasts for more than a couple of days, a visit to your vet is in order to ensure proper pet care.

What causes it?

In most cases diarrhoea occurs simply because the intestine has become inflamed and irritated – either because your dog ate something that didn’t agree with him or because of an infection (anything from viruses to worms). In its early stages diarrhoea seldom causes obvious illness, but if it lasts more than a couple of days your dog will usually start feeling sorry for himself – usually because of the loss of salts and fluids from the body and the general discomfort involved. If the inflammation is deeper than just the gut surface then there may be blood in the diarrhoea (this is called dysentery) – this is a cause of worry for most owners, but in properly vaccinated dogs it is seldom as serious as it appears. If your dog starts to vomit it usually marks the spread of inflammation higher up the gut towards the stomach.

One serious cause of diarrhoea is the viral infection caused by Parvovirus. This is a fast-spreading disease usually affecting younger dogs and can be fatal – fortunately it is easily prevented with the vaccine that all dogs should be given when they are puppies, and annually boosted. Dogs affected with Parvovirus are usually suddenly very ill, with bloody diarrhoea and vomiting. Other viruses and bacteria may cause diarrhoea too, but are usually milder than Parvovirius infections. Although parasitic worms can cause diarrhoea they are seldom present in sufficient numbers in adult dogs to do so, though they can in puppies.

Owners of dogs which are in the habit of scavenging and eating rubbish will often be able to predict a problem before it starts – typically their pet turns up looking a bit sheepish and guilty, and this is followed by progressively louder stomach rumblings and whiffy wind and then finally several bouts of diarrhoea. You’ll know if you have a dog like this!

Other cases of diarrhoea occur because dogs have eaten something quite normal that just happens not to agree with them as an individual. Again, most owners of such dogs will in time become aware of certain things that their dog cannot eat because it gives them the runs.

What can I do to help?

For simple cases of diarrhoea it usually helps to put your dog on a bland diet of white meats, e.g. white fish (i.e. not mackerel, salmon, herring, tuna, etc) or chicken, together with boiled rice or pasta. This should be fed until the diarrhoea has ceased and the normal diet introduced gradually over a period of about three days. Because diarrhoea strips fluids from the body always make sure your dog has constant access to water to prevent dehydration. In cases which appear to be associated with feeding a particular food, then avoid that in future.

You can buy a number of very helpful over-the-counter treatments for dogs with diarrhoea and other dog health products available without veterinary prescription in the UK. There are a number of products to help soothe the gut lining and absorb any toxins which may be present and also things to help restore salts and electrolytes which may have been lost, and yet more to help establish a proper mix of ‘good bugs’ in the gut – so called pro-biotics and pre-biotics. As for worming, dogs over six months of age should be wormed four times a year to ensure they stay effectively worm-free, whilst a puppy should be wormed at least monthly. Excellent wormers for adult dogs and pups are available without prescription.

While your dog has diarrhoea, give him a rest from his normal exercise routine – just like you, he probably doesn’t feel much like exercise when unwell. Also remember that there may be germs involved which can infect humans, such as E. coli, so it’s very important to maintain high levels of personal and household hygiene to protect you and your other family members.

When should I call my vet?

It’s an important principle of pet care to know when you should take your pet to your vet as opposed to doing things for yourself. Here’s a list of reasons to consult your vet if your dog has diarrhoea:

If your dog loses his normal brightness and vigour.
If the condition worsens – for instance if after a couple of days of diarrhoea he starts to vomit, or if dysentery develops.
If your dog stops eating or drinking.
If he becomes dehydrated (if you notice his eyes sink in their sockets, his skin becomes less moveable over his body, his mouth becomes dry or tacky).
If he’s not properly vaccinated and up to date with his boosters and he’s looking ill along with having diarrhoea – especially if you’ve heard there’s Parvovirus in the district.
In multi-dog households, if others start to have diarrhoea too.
